10,001 Santas – supporting a worthwhile charity record attempt

On 9 December 2007, an ambitious attempt was made to gather 10,001 Santa Clauses on the famous ‘Derry Walls’ in Northern Ireland to set a new world record and raise some money for charity at the same time.

The registration fee donated by each Santa was used to help four very worthwhile charities based in the northwest of the province.

Children in Crossfire exists to make a significant and lasting contribution towards the eradication of poverty. The Foyle Hospice provides much-needed care and support for terminally ill patients and their families. icare 4 autism works to give children with autism a better start in life and better hopes for the future. Macmillan Cancer Support provides essential practical, medical, emotional and financial support to those affected by cancer and their families.

By setting up tea stands at local shopping centres, Nambarrie was able to raise some money to help support the initiative and, importantly, help raise awareness by spreading the message to the community. The tea stand proved to be a great way to get shoppers chatting about the event and register to take part.

At the final count, 12,965 people registered for the event - a staggering achievement by anyone's standards and well worth the effort considering the money that was raised. To find out more, you can visit the official 10,001 Santas website.
